Fix “Universal IDs are missing” and “Invalid GTIN” in Meta Commerce Manager

Updated 20 September 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer. Commerce Manager shows “Universal IDs are missing” (on a product: “Universal identifier missing”) when a product has none of brand, gtin and mpn, and “Invalid GTIN” when the gtin is not a UPC, EAN, JAN, ISBN or ITF-14 number. Provide the brand at minimum, add the GTIN only when you are sure it is correct and written without dashes or spaces, and never fill the field with a placeholder.

What Commerce Manager means by “Universal IDs are missing, Invalid GTIN

Meta’s data feed troubleshooting page asks for at least one of three fields to identify a product: brand, GTIN or MPN. A product with none is “Universal IDs are missing” on the feed report and “Universal identifier missing” on the product. A GTIN, when given, must be in a supported format, UPC, EAN, JAN, ISBN or ITF-14, or the report says “Invalid GTIN”. The product data specification lists the lengths (12, 13, 8 or 13, 13 and 14 digits), says to write them without dashes or spaces, and adds a caution Google does not: only provide a GTIN if you are sure it is correct.

Since brand is itself a required field on Meta, a product that satisfies the required list already satisfies this one; the error therefore usually means brand is missing too.

Why it happens

How to fix it

In Shopify

Fill Vendor on every product; it becomes brand and satisfies the requirement on its own. Barcodes go in the variant’s Barcode field, digits only, and only when they are the product’s real GTIN.

In WooCommerce

Assign a brand term to every product and, where you have barcodes, fill the GTIN field WooCommerce 9.2 added. Our free plugin sends both when present and never turns a SKU into an MPN.

In a CSV or XML feed

Fill brand on every row. Validate gtin values by length and strip dashes and spaces; empty the cell for anything that is not a real barcode. Use mpn only for a genuine manufacturer part number.

How long until Commerce Manager clears it

On the next upload with a brand (or a valid GTIN or MPN) on the affected rows.

What FeedRobin does about it

The free feed check validates GTINs by length and check digit and counts products with no brand and no identifiers at all. We drop invalid GTINs rather than send them, and never invent one; for connected stores brand comes from the store’s field.

Questions merchants ask

Is a GTIN required by Meta?

No. Meta’s specification says not all products have one and to provide one only if you are sure it is correct. Brand alone satisfies the identifier requirement; a GTIN helps classification when it is right.

Which GTIN lengths does Meta accept?

UPC (12 digits), EAN (13), JAN (8 or 13), ISBN-13 (13; convert old ISBN-10 numbers) and ITF-14 (14), written as digits without dashes or spaces.

How is this different from Google’s GTIN rule?

Google limits performance without a GTIN and disapproves an invalid one; Meta only asks for one of three identifiers and treats brand as sufficient. A feed that satisfies Google satisfies Meta here; the reverse is not always true.
