Short answer. gender says who an apparel product is for: male, female or unisex, submitted in English. Required for all Apparel & Accessories products in free listings, and in Shopping ads for Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States; optional elsewhere.

For Apparel & Accessories products in the required markets, yes; shoes are in that category.

What about children’s clothing?

gender still applies (or unisex), with age_group saying which children.
